From a 200 page manuscript prepared by Fernanda and Jaime, George Redfield learns about their lives from the time she crossed the border as an illegal alien at the age of four, her upbringing and adoption by the Deering family, her encounter with Jaime Nuñez at Yale University and their subsequent travels through Mexico culminating in the meeting with General Humberto Cardona Hill, the drug czar of Mexico.
The adventures and the ensuing love triangle of these three individuals as they confront and try to make sense of their roles in the world of ‘narcotraffic’ are the basis for the novel. From either side of the border each will become hardened, bitter and disillusioned through the dehumanizing confrontations brought on by the ‘war on drugs.’ Against this backdrop, the effects of this war on law enforcement, government corruption, assassinations, torture and the killing of women and children in the highlands of the Sierra Madre Occidental will in time challenge their chances of survival.
